No matter what you call this dish – stuffing or dressing – it is sure to become a family favorite around the Thanksgiving dinner table!

Serves: 8
Prep time: 20 minutes
Cook time: 1 hour

Ingredients:

Editor's note: If you don't want to make the homemade ingredients (unsalted butter, poultry seasoning, garlic powder, and onion powder), you can substitute store-bought.

Directions:

  1. To make homemade bread cubes: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Cut bread into cubes. Spread bread cubes in a single layer on a large baking sheet. Bake for 5 to 7 minutes in oven, or until evenly toasted. Transfer toasted bread cubes to a large bowl and set aside. If using store-bought bread cubes, skip this step.
  2. Next, make the broth. In a saucepan, add 8 cups of water with the gizzards and neck of the turkey. Add the Better Than Bouillon. Bring to a boil and simmer for 30 minutes; remove from heat.
  3. Mince the cooked gizzards and neck meat; sprinkle over dried bread cubes.
  4. Melt butter or margarine in a skillet over medium heat. Cook onion and celery in butter, stirring frequently.
  5. Pour cooked vegetable mixture over bread cubes in a very large mixing bowl. Season with poultry seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, sage, salt and pepper. Add beaten eggs and toss with your hands to mix. Pour in two cups of hot broth to moisten; mix well.
  6. Traditional Method: Stuff the turkey loosely with the mixture. If there is any leftover stuffing, place it in a greased casserole dish and cook it using the Slow Cooker or Oven Method.
  7. Slow Cooker Method: Transfer the stuffing mixture to a slow cooker. Cover with a thin kitchen towel and then cover with the slow cooker lid. Cook on high for 45 minutes, then reduce heat to low and cook for 4 to 8 hours. If you need to moisten the stuffing, add a little chicken broth.
  8. Oven Directions: Transfer the stuffing mixture to a 9x13-inch greased baking dish or other large casserole dish. Bake uncovered for 45 minutes to 1 hour at 350 degrees. Check the stuffing about halfway through and add more broth as needed. Cover with tin foil if it is getting too dark.
